The twenty-five year old high-pressure sodium luminaries were replaced with LED luminaries, with each luminaire controlled by an integral occupancy sensor that varies operation between high and low output settings. This offers the additional benefit of reducing energy use when the plaza is unoccupied, while still providing enough lighting for visibility. This unique project was selected as a study by the Department of Energy's GATEWAY Demonstration Program, which seeks to showcase high-performance LED products' performance and cost effectiveness.
